Boom Lift vs. Scissor Lift: Which Aerial Lift Does Your Job Need?

Boom Lift vs. Scissor Lift: Which Aerial Lift Does Your Job Need?

Both boom lifts and scissor lifts get workers safely off the ground, but they solve different problems. Renting the wrong one costs you a day and a re-delivery. Here's a clear, practical comparison to help contractors across Upland and the Inland Empire choose with confidence.

The core difference: straight up vs. up and over

A scissor lift raises a large platform straight up. A boom lift extends an arm that can reach up, out, and over obstacles. If your work is directly overhead across a broad area — ceilings, racking, walls — the scissor lift wins. If you need to clear a roof edge, reach across landscaping, or get to one high point past an obstruction, the boom is the tool.

Reach and height

Scissor lifts commonly reach 19 to 40 feet of platform height and only go vertical. Boom lifts go much higher and add horizontal reach (called "outreach"). Articulating boom lifts bend at the joints to navigate around obstacles; telescoping (straight) booms trade flexibility for maximum height and outreach. When you only need to be high and off to the side, outreach matters as much as height.

Platform size and capacity

Scissor lifts offer a big deck — room for two workers plus materials — which is why they're favored for production work like drywall or electrical across a ceiling. Boom platforms are smaller, sized for one or two workers and hand tools. If you're moving lots of material up, lean scissor.

Footprint and ground conditions

Electric scissor lifts are compact and fit through standard doors for indoor, finished-floor work. Boom lifts are larger and heavier, and rough-terrain models are built for outdoor dirt and slopes. Always match the machine to the surface — see our guide to choosing the right equipment for a full rundown.

Quick decision guide

  • Choose a scissor lift for indoor ceilings, warehouse maintenance, painting, drywall, and any wide overhead work at moderate height.
  • Choose a boom lift for tree work, roof access, sign and tower work, or anywhere you must reach over an obstacle or up to a single high point.
  • Still unsure? Tell us the height, the obstacle (if any), the surface, and how many workers — we'll point you to the right unit.

What about cost?

Scissor lifts generally rent for less than comparable boom lifts because they're simpler machines. But the cheapest lift that can't do the job is the most expensive mistake. Pick on capability first, then optimize the rental term — a weekly rate often beats stacking daily rentals.

Articulating vs. telescopic booms

If a boom lift is the answer, there's a second choice to make. An articulating (knuckle) boom bends at multiple joints, so it can reach up and then over or around an obstacle — perfect for getting to a point above a roofline, past landscaping, or over parked equipment. A telescopic (straight) boom trades that flexibility for the most height and horizontal outreach, making it the choice for tall, open work like sign installation or steel. Articulating booms are the more versatile pick on cluttered sites; telescopic booms win when you simply need to go far and high in a straight shot.

Don't forget power and surface

Electric and hybrid booms run clean and quiet for indoor or noise-sensitive work, while engine-powered rough-terrain booms handle dirt, gravel, and slopes outdoors. As with scissor lifts, matching the machine to the ground conditions keeps you safe and productive — a slab machine bogs down or tips on soft ground, and a rough-terrain unit is overkill (and oversized) for a finished warehouse floor. Tell us the surface and we'll spec accordingly.
